Banjac families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Cazinska Krajina Region (Bosnia), but often Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Cazins Region, Bosnia (Bosanska Krupa area). In Donji Dubovik in Cazins Region (Bosnia) every seventh inhabitant had the family name Banjac.
Prevalence
About 230 people with faimily name Banjac live in Croatia today, in 110 households. There were 140 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 60 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 34 cities and 29 other places, mostly in Zagreb (75), Pakrac (10), Budimci in Nasice area (10), Osijek (<10), and in Koska in Nasice area (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1923 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
