Ban families are Croats and they are mostly from Rijeka area. According to some sources they are from Kresevo near Sarajevo, but to other souces they are Saxon origin. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Rijeka. In Podhum in Rijeka area every fifth inhabitant had the family name Ban.
Prevalence
About 2600 people with faimily name Ban live in Croatia today, in 1100 households. There were 2500 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number remains constant. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 80 cities and 247 other places, mostly in Zagreb (390), Split (155), Rijeka (150), Podhum in Rijeka area (105), and in Bedekovcina in Lepoglava area (80).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over sixty times, the first time 1640 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
