Balta families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from middle Bosnia , rarely Serbs. According to some sources they are from Hungary, Turske and Latvije. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Middle Bosnia (Travnik area) and in Middle Bosnia (Zenica area). In Podstinje in Middle Bosnia nearly every inhabitant had the family name Balta.
Prevalence
About 250 people with faimily name Balta live in Croatia today, in 100 households. There were 100 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number more than doubled. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 32 cities and 31 other places, mostly in Zagreb (60), Split (30), Osijek (15), Vrbovec (<10), and in Karlovac (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1929 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
