Balać families are mainly Serbs and they are mostly from Obrovac area , whereas often Croats. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Obrovac area and in Slatina area. In Kruge in Obrovac area every fifth inhabitant had the family name Balać.
Prevalence
About 160 people with faimily name Balać live in Croatia today, in 90 households. There were 220 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 21 cities and 23 other places, mostly in Donji Lapac (20) and Nebljusi (15) in Obrovac area, Zagreb (15), Ervenik in Knin area (<10), and in Kestenovac in Obrovac area (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1917 in source List of Dignitaries, Officials and Public Servants of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
