Bakula families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from Herzegovina , rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Herzegovina (Posusje area) and in Middle Bosnia (Zepce area). In Čalikovac in Middle Bosnia every third inhabitant had the family name Bakula.
Prevalence
About 550 people with faimily name Bakula live in Croatia today, in 230 households. There were 100 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number multiplied. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 39 cities and 50 other places, mostly in Zagreb (175), Sibenik (55), Sesvete (35), Split (30), and in Trogir (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
