Bakota families are Croats and they are mostly from Makarska area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Makarska area and in Split. In places Biokovsko Selo and Krstatice in Makarska area every eighth inhabitant had the family name Bakota.
Prevalence
About 450 people with faimily name Bakota live in Croatia today, in 170 households. There were 280 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 60 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 22 cities and 25 other places, mostly in Split (200), Podstrana in Solin area (60), Zagreb (40), Osijek (35), and in Makarska (35).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
