Babić families are usually Croats and they are mostly from Senj. According to some sources they are from Pridraga, Perusic (Lika), Krasna (Senj), rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Rijeka. In Gornji Hrgovi in Tuzla Region (Bosnia) every third inhabitant had the family name Babić.
Prevalence
About 12100 people with faimily name Babić live in Croatia today, in 5100 households. There were 9400 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 30 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 122 cities and 933 other places, mostly in Zagreb (2195), Rijeka (705), Split (690), Osijek (275), and in Sesvete (260).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over two hundred times, the first time 1642 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
