Alavanja families are mainly Serbs and they are mostly from Benkovac , whereas often Croats (from Zadar). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Benkovac and Zadar. In Kreštelovac in Daruvar area every sixth inhabitant had the family name Alavanja.
Prevalence
About 430 people with faimily name Alavanja live in Croatia today, in 220 households. There were 590 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 31 cities and 33 other places, mostly in Rijeka (40), Zadar (40), Zagreb (35), Ugljan on the Island of Ugljan (20), and in Vukovar (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
