In Croatia, Šiljak families are predominantly Croats (from Ozalj area ), rarely Serbs, and very rarely Bosniaks (from Velika Gorica ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Ozalj area. In Cernik in Ozalj area every fifth inhabitant had the family name Šiljak.
Prevalence
About 70 people with faimily name Šiljak live in Croatia today, in 40 households. There were 130 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number halved. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 12 cities and 15 other places, mostly in Zagreb (20), Cernik in Ozalj area (<10), Obrovnica (<10), Pula (<5), and in Vinkovci (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
