Šarkezi families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Donji Miholjac , also Hungarians (from Osijek area ) very rarely Roms. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Osijek and Donji Miholjac.
Prevalence
About 80 people with faimily name Šarkezi live in Croatia today, in 50 households. There were 100 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 20 percent. They are located in 9 Croatian counties, in 10 cities and 22 other places, mostly in Osijek (20), Zagreb (10), Donji Miholjac (<10), Beli Manastir (<5), and in Lug in Osijek area (<5).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 1917 in source List of Dignitaries, Officials and Public Servants of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
