Šain families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from the Island of Korcula , barely Serbs and Italians. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born on the Island of Korcula and in Middle Bosnia (Kakanj area). In Pupnat on the Island of Korcula every ninth inhabitant had the family name Šain.
Prevalence
About 330 people with faimily name Šain live in Croatia today, in 130 households. There were 200 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 70 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 29 cities and 35 other places, mostly in Zagreb (45), in Cara (35), Pupnat (35) and Korcula (35) on the Island of Korcula, and in Marcana in Pula area (30).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1929 in source Emigration Commission Zagreb.
