Tomaš families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Makarska area , rarely Serbs and Hungarians. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and Trogir. In Prisika in Middle Bosnia every fourth inhabitant had the family name Tomaš.
Prevalence
About 1200 people with faimily name Tomaš live in Croatia today, in 480 households. There were 880 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 40 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 43 cities and 89 other places, mostly in Split (150), Trogir (140), Jesenice in Omis area (115), Zagreb (100), and in Kastel Luksic (60).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over fifty times, the first time 1729 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
