Smajić families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Osijek area , often Bosniaks (from Bosnian Posavina ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and in Bosanian Posavina (Gradacac area). In Grajani in Middle Bosnia nearly every inhabitant had the family name Smajić.
Prevalence
About 330 people with faimily name Smajić live in Croatia today, in 140 households. There were 140 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number more than doubled. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 41 cities and 28 other places, mostly in Zagreb (75), Split (70), Rijeka (30), Slavonski Brod (25), and in Osijek (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
