Sekelj families are Croats and they are mostly from Ivanec. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Varazdin and Zagreb. In Stažnjevec in Ivanec every ninth inhabitant had the family name Sekelj.
Prevalence
About 170 people with faimily name Sekelj live in Croatia today, in 80 households. There were 190 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in 9 Croatian counties, in 12 cities and 16 other places, mostly in Staznjevec (30), Zagreb (30), Varazdin (25), Krizevci (20), and in Zgalisce in Vrbovec area (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1679 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
