Samardžija families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Podrinje (Bosnia), often Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Pozega and in Middle Bosnia (Maglaj area). In Ponijevo in Middle Bosnia every ninth inhabitant had the family name Samardžija.
Prevalence
About 980 people with faimily name Samardžija live in Croatia today, in 460 households. There were 1100 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 54 cities and 129 other places, mostly in Zagreb (125), Karlovac (55), Pozega (35), Knin (35), and in Slavonski Brod (35).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
