Ranković families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Zagreb. According to some sources they are from Herzegovina (village Rankovici near Novi Travnik) or Zumberak, often Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Vinkovci area.
Prevalence
About 120 people with faimily name Ranković live in Croatia today, in 60 households. There were 70 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 80 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 17 cities and 21 other places, mostly in Zagreb (25), Bijelo Brdo in Vinkovci area (20), Varazdin (<10), Sracinec in Varazdin area (<10), and in Trpinja in Vukovar area (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1917 in source List of Dignitaries, Officials and Public Servants of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
