Ponjević families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Cazinska Krajina Region (Bosnia), also Serbs and Bosniaks (from Cazinska Krajina Region , Bosnia). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Cazins Region, Bosnia (Velika Kladusa area) and in Drnis. In Čelinja in Cazins Region (Bosnia) every third inhabitant had the family name Ponjević.
Prevalence
About 90 people with faimily name Ponjević live in Croatia today, in 40 households. There were 40 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number doubled. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 20 cities and 15 other places, mostly in Zagreb (15), Brsadin in Vukovar area (10), Rijeka (10), Vukovar (<10), and in Badanj (<10).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned few times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
