Nikšić families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Gospic. According to some sources they are from Herzegovina (Capljina, Medjugorje and Ljubuski), rarely Serbs, and Bosniaks (western Bosnia). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Gospic and Zagreb. In Široka Kula in Gospic every fourth inhabitant had the family name Nikšić.
About 1100 people with faimily name Nikšić live in Croatia today, in 480 households. There were 1300 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 64 cities and 101 other places, mostly in Zagreb (250), Osijek (60), Rijeka (50), Vukovar (40), and in Sinac (40).
