Matijević families are usually Croats and they are mostly from middle Bosnia. According to some sources they are from Lika, rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Middle Bosnia (Maglaj area). In Petrova Poljana in Duga Resa area nearly every inhabitant had the family name Matijević.
Prevalence
About 4500 people with faimily name Matijević live in Croatia today, in 1900 households. There were 3400 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 30 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 96 cities and 414 other places, mostly in Zagreb (880), Rijeka (275), Split (170), Osijek (140), and in Slavonski Brod (105).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over a hundred times, the first time 1691 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
