Matić families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from western Bosnia. According to some sources they are from Zadar area, very rarely Serbs, and Bosniaks. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Western Bosnia (Tomislavgrad area) and in Zagreb. In places Liskovača and Borčani in Western Bosnia every second inhabitant had the family name Matić.
Prevalence
About 9300 people with faimily name Matić live in Croatia today, in 3700 households. There were 4700 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number doubled. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 110 cities and 662 other places, mostly in Zagreb (1955), Split (510), Rijeka (275), Slavonski Brod (260), and in Dubrovnik (240).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over a hundred times, the first time 1710 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
