Marić families are almost entirely Croats and they are mostly from east Herzegovina. According to some sources they are from Podravina or Knin, rarely Serbs, and Bosniaks (Mostar, Bosnia). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Herzegovina (Mostar area) and in Doboj, Bosnia (Doboj area). In places Goranci and Vrdi in Herzegovina every fourth inhabitant had the family name Marić.
About 11200 people with faimily name Marić live in Croatia today, in 4500 households. There were 4500 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number more than doubled. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 116 cities and 747 other places, mostly in Zagreb (2295), Slavonski Brod (730), Split (345), Zadar (315), and in Osijek (305).
