Mažuran families are Croats and they are mostly from Pag area. According to some sources they are from the Island of Cres. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and in Pag area. In Konjsko in Pag area every second inhabitant had the family name Mažuran.
Prevalence
About 150 people with faimily name Mažuran live in Croatia today, in 80 households. There were 270 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 40 percent. They are located in 9 Croatian counties, in 13 cities and 11 other places, mostly in Zagreb (95), Rijeka (10), Karlovac (10), Karlobag in Pag area (<10), and in Slavonski Brod (<10).
Outside Croatia
At least six families with this surname emigrated from Croatia to: the United States (2), Germany (1), Sweden (1), Australia (1), and to Austria (1). Family name Mažuran is present in 14 countries worldwide. The family name "Mazuran " is used by small number of people in Thailand , small number in Australia , and small number of people in the United States.
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1917 in source List of Dignitaries, Officials and Public Servants of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.
