Mašić families are often Croats and they are mostly from Varazdin area , less frequently Bosniaks (from Bosnian Posavina ) and Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Varazdin and Zagreb. In places Sarajlije and Kongora in Western Bosnia every seventh inhabitant had the family name Mašić.
Prevalence
About 1100 people with faimily name Mašić live in Croatia today, in 480 households. There were 990 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 20 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 69 cities and 132 other places, mostly in Zagreb (320), Slavonski Brod (115), Vidovec in Varazdin area (55), Varazdin (55), and in Rijeka (50).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1692 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
