Kovačić families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Zagreb. According to some sources they are from Lika, Podravina (Djurdjevac) and northeast Bosnia, very rarely Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Split. In Čelina in Omis nearly every inhabitant had the family name Kovačić.
Prevalence
About 9700 people with faimily name Kovačić live in Croatia today, in 4100 households. There were 9900 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number remains constant. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 109 cities and 775 other places, mostly in Zagreb (1755), Split (310), Rijeka (215), Velika Gorica (200), and in Sesvete (195).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over three hundred times, the first time 1669 in source Catholic Church Parish Records.
