Bokan families are predominantly Croats and they are mostly from Opuzen area , less frequently Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Metkovic and in Djurdjevac area. In Aginci in Bosnian Krajina every second inhabitant had the family name Bokan.
Prevalence
About 270 people with faimily name Bokan live in Croatia today, in 120 households. There were 300 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 10 percent. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 33 cities and 23 other places, mostly in Zagreb (60), Metkovic (55), Split (25), Betina on the Island of Murter (15), and in Pitomaca in Djurdjevac area (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
