Božanić families are often Croats and they are mostly from the Island of Vis , less frequently Serbs. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and on the Island of Vis.
Prevalence
About 350 people with faimily name Božanić live in Croatia today, in 190 households. There were 550 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 40 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 22 cities and 19 other places, mostly in Split (100), Komiza on the Island of Vis (100), Rijeka (30), Zagreb (25), and in Zadar (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1902 in source Hartmann's General List of Apartments in Zagreb.
