Žulj families are Croats and they are mostly from middle Bosnia. According to some sources they are from Herzegovina. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Herzegovina (Grude area) and in Osijek. In places Jazvenik and Zlosela in Middle Bosnia every eighth inhabitant had the family name Žulj.
Prevalence
About 650 people with faimily name Žulj live in Croatia today, in 280 households. There were 160 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number multiplied. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 47 cities and 62 other places, mostly in Zagreb (150), Osijek (80), Vukovar (25), Valpovo (25), and in Visnjevac (20).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
