Španović families are mainly Serbs and they are mostly from Duga Resa area , whereas often Croats (from Nasice ). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Hrvatska Kostajnica area and in Duga Resa area. In Gornji Žirovac in Hrvatska Kostajnica area every tenth inhabitant had the family name Španović.
Prevalence
About 260 people with faimily name Španović live in Croatia today, in 140 households. There were 570 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number halved. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 29 cities and 33 other places, mostly in Zagreb (45), Borovo in Vukovar area (20), Krstinja in Duga Resa area (20), Sisak (15), and in Nova Gradiska (15).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
