Šoštar families are Croats and they are mostly from Klanjec area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Zagreb and Varazdin. In Gornji Oštrc in Ozalj area every eighth inhabitant had the family name Šoštar.

About 460 people with faimily name Šoštar live in Croatia today, in 190 households. There were 650 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number decreased by 30 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 32 cities and 48 other places, mostly in Zagreb (115), Ivanec (65), Veliko Trgovisce in Zabok area (20), Gredice (20), and in Trsteno in Klanjec area (15).
Outside Croatia
At least four families with this surname emigrated from Croatia to Argentina (2) and the United States (2). Family name Šoštar (including: Sostar , Soostar ) is present in four countries on two continents.
