Šitum families are Croats and they are mostly from Omis area. In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Omis area and in Bosanian Posavina (Derventa area). In Cista Provo in Omis area every fourth inhabitant had the family name Šitum.
Prevalence
About 620 people with faimily name Šitum live in Croatia today, in 230 households. There were 170 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number more than tripled. They are located in almost all Croatian counties, in 28 cities and 32 other places, mostly in Zagreb (145), Cista Provo in Omis area (110), Split (100), Sesvete (45), and in Ivankovo in Vinkovci area (40).
Outside Croatia
Family name Šitum is present in 11 countries on three continents. The family name "Situm " is used by some 200 people in Indonesia , about 100 in Austria , and small number of people in the United States.
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
