Šarčević families are mainly Croats and they are mostly from Rama (north Herzegovina) (Bosnia), rarely Serbs, and Bosniaks (Bosanska Krajina). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Bosanian Posavina (Brcko area) and in Djakovo. In Donji Zovik in Bosanian Posavina every fifth inhabitant had the family name Šarčević.
Prevalence
About 1100 people with faimily name Šarčević live in Croatia today, in 490 households. There were 730 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 50 percent. They are located in all Croatian counties, in 58 cities and 131 other places, mostly in Zagreb (150), Djakovo (65), Rijeka (55), Vinkovci (50), and in Bosnjaci in Zupanja area (45).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over twenty times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
