About 400 people with faimily name Čukelj live in Croatia today, in 170 households. There were 350 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 10 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 25 cities and 39 other places, mostly in Zagreb (85), Laz Bistricki in Zlatar area (65), Sesvete (35), Budinscina in Zlatar area (30), and in Ivankovo in Vinkovci area (20).
Outside Croatia
At least two families with this surname emigrated from Croatia to the United States (1) and Germany (1). Family name Čukelj (including: Cukelj , Cuceli ) is present in 10 countries on four continents. The family name "Cukelj " is used by small number of people in Germany and small number in the United States.
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over ten times, the first time 1906 in source Yearbook and Directory of Literary Society of St. Jerome 1906.
