Čagalj families are Croats and they are mostly from Makarska area (Zagvozd). In the past century, relatively most of Croatian residents bearing this family name were born in Split and in Makarska area.
Prevalence
About 810 people with faimily name Čagalj live in Croatia today, in 310 households. There were 520 of them in the middle of the past century, and their number increased by 60 percent. They are located in the most of Croatian counties, in 28 cities and 43 other places, mostly in Split (235), Zagvozd in Makarska area (135), Omis (60), Zagreb (55), and in Dubrovnik (40).
In the sources analysed in the project Acta Croatica so far, the name is mentioned over five times, the first time 2007 in source Encyclopaedia of Croatian Surnames.
