Memories: Vranješ

Many people with the surname Vranješ emigrated from Croatia to Australia and New Zealand starting in the 1890s. My grandfather who emigrated to Australia in the 1920s came from Vrgorac. Most other Vranješi came from Kozica and Poljica in the Vrgorac region. Some people with the same surname emigrated from Podgora (Makarska) and Cetina (near Knin).

There was a large exodus of people from southern Dalmatia to Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s and 1930s.

In Australia, the surname has been Anglicised from Vranješ to Vranjes, Vranges, Vrangees or Vranyes. Today, there are at least two hundred people with this surname in Australia and New Zealand.
