Part of my family's story begins with my great-grandparents Ivan Marinov Vitasovic and Marija Boroje Vitasovic. In 1924, they left their beloved homeland Blato, in the island of Korcula - then part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia - in search of a better life, since a plague have destroyed their grapevines. They arrived in Brazil and worked for many years harvesting cotton in a farm in Itatinga, a small town in the countryside of the State of São Paulo. There, my grandfather Vicente Vitachovic was born in 1933 (the family surname was changed due to a registry error). He and his parents arrived in the capital city of São Paulo and he met my grandmother Maria Motta Vasques. They got married and had three children. He passed away in 2005, but he is still alive in my memories.
