There are a number of families with the Posavec surname in Hungary, mainly in Zala county, although practically all of them written with Hungarian ortography as Poszavecz. Among them was my late grandmother Mária Poszavecz, born in 1897 in the city of Nagykanizsa, where this surname is fairly common. As I could figure out through my genealogical research, the ancestors of these families settled there in the 17th century or before. The oldest Poszavecz was baptized in Nagykanizsa in 1694, four years after the beginning of parish registration in the city. These families were naturally of Croatian origin but became completely Hungarianized by the middle of the 19th century.
