Memories: John Delistović

My maternal grandfather, John Delistovich, came to the U.S. as a teenager. He was born on the island of Premuda, Dalmatia, and settled in Jersey City, NJ, USA. His mother's name was Santa Sucić. He worked on the tugboats on the Hudson River which were owned by the Erie Lakawana Railroad. He had a son, Slyvester, and a daughter, Mary Antonia, my mother. He married Libera Caterina Spada who was born in Schilpario (BG), Italy. She was known as Catherine or "Kate" in the U.S. After he came to the U.S. he brought his nephew, John Smircić, to the U.S. "Uncle John," as we knew him, at first worked on the boats on the Hudson River but later moved to Texas where he bought his own boat and became a shrimper. Uncle John had four sons, one of whom was named Dinko. His first wife was Croatian. His second wife's name was Bernice. Uncle John was a great dancer!
