Memories: Ferdinar

My great grandfather was Stephen Ferdinand. Many records say Ferdinando because he married an Italian woman from Genoa and she preferred that. The family always said the name Ferdinand was not the real last name and that it was changed when he came to America (March 1881), however, I can find nothing that would indicate what the name might have been changed from, if it was changed. My mother always said the name had "sich" or "chitz" at the end originally, but no one remembers the name, if that was even true. A passenger list from Philadelphia for Sept 1903 says my great grandfather sponsored 4 men coming to work in America. Their names were Anton Rogic, Luka Rogic, Erko Aric and Andre Vukosic. They are listed as step-brother, brother-in-law and cousins, but I don't know if that was true. They stayed with Stephen and his family for a while in New Jersey, USA. Records say grandfather was "Austrian", but more specifically maybe it is "Croatian". I wonder if Ferdinand or Ferdinar or something else was the real last name. Is there another site I can look for more information on births, church records, if there are any left? Thank you. Lois
