Sjećanje: Bartaković

The origin of the surname Bartaković

With reference to the historical sources, (old lists and books), twelve Croatian tribes in the seventh century arrived from the North to the Western Balkan (today's Bosnia and Croatia). Among the more numerous and more powerful noble tribes are the Šubić (Shubich), Kačić (Kachich), Mogorović (Mogorovich), Gusić (Gusich), Lapčan (Lapchan) (near town Nin), etc. All the tribes branched with time in the lineages, and later in the houses. For example, lineages and houses of Budiselić, Babonožac, Bartaković, Disislavić, Drašković, Malić, Slišković, Tolimirović, Utišenović, etc. belong to tribe of Mogorović. Utišenović or Utišenić (today's Utješinović/Utješenović, eng. Utishinovych) are the descendants of Matia's (Mogorović) son, Utišen /Utissen, Latin). (On ikavian dialect, Utissen=Utišen means consolated). At the end of the sixteenth century, the descendants of Bartak (Utišenić) Utissenych de Kamychak (nobles Joannes/Ivan, Gasparus/Gašpar and Georgius/Juraj) were the first bearers of the last (patronymic) name Bartak-ović

(The house of Bartakovic). It means Bartak Utissenych/latin/, Utishenych/eng., (Utišenić/older Croatian, or Utješinović/recent Croatian) is ancestor of all Bartakovićs (Bartaković, Bartakovič, Bartakovich, Bartakovićs, Bartakovic, Barthakowych, Bartakovicz) in all the world. Bartak was the uncle of the bishop, cardinal and royal governor by the Croatian-Hungarian King John of Zápolya (Ivan Zapolja), famous Georgius Utissenych/Juraj Utišenić (known as brother (Fra.) Georgius/or Fra Martinusius) or Georgi Martinuzzi. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Martinuzzi The monk's father Grgur was the brother of Bartak. Monk's mother was princess Ana Martinušević (Martinuzzi).

Noble Bartak Utissenych (Utišenović/Utješinović), as mentioned above, had three grown sons, of which begin the last name (surname and house) Bartaković, Gaspar/Gašpar, Joannes/Ivan and Georgi/Juraj.

The first documented data on the origin of house of Bartaković in Croatian history begins with the Mogorović, to which Bartakovićs undoubtedly belong.

Gašpar Bartaković, (baron Gaspar Barthakowych de Kwklych),

the coat of arms

All Croatian Bartakovićs are certainly his offspring. All recent Croatian Bartakovićs are from the Žumberak mountain region. Gaspar moved to Central Croatia due to the Turkish invasion in Lika county, from his (Utishenovich) estate in Eastern Lika (Kuklich/Kuklić nearby Gospić). He either bought or got a gift of land from the count Nikola Zrinski, in Wolawya Superior. Wolawya Superior today, is the village called Draga Svetojanska, near Jastrebarsko. It is written in the old royal tax records that the previous land owner in Wolawya Superior was a Vice-Banus (later the Banus/Vice-King/ Zrinski). Šubić/Subich, Lapčan/Lapchan, Kačić/Kachich, Gusić/Gusich and Mogorović/Mogorovich noble tribes lived mostly in the counties Dalmatia and Lika, territorially intertwined for centuries, so they were often helping each eather (and quarreled too). Gaspar/Gašpar, and later his sons Barisha/Bariša and Nikola, were recorded as owners of solid land estates in the Jastrebarsko-Samobor area, possesions Konščica, Domagovići, and Volavje (Wolawya), as can be seen from the book of royal taxes and other sources. Gaspar, as a vassal nobleman, was a person of the trust of the Banus (Vice-King) Ivan Karlović/Iohannes Torquatus/ (from the noble people of Gusich) and later of the Banus Nikola Zrinski, from the Shubich tribe. Baron Gaspar Barthakowych de Kwklych represented their interests and the interests of the Croatian Parliament to the Habsburg's King Ferdinand and the emperor Karlo in Vienna and to their army leader, the duke Johannes Katzianer in Graz. Gaspar also served as a negotiator with the Ottoman Turks. It can be also seen from regesta (A regesta is explained and printed an old handwritten document.) that he was once in dispute with countess Marija Frankopan. She did not pay the promised money for a village (of course with the serfs, BK) and, so Gaspar sought justice of the King in this case. Gašpar probably died from old age around 1573, when Big Serf Rebellion of Matias Gubec was.

(BARTAKOVIĆ de Kuklić/Barthakowych de Kwklych)

Very old nobility (Cro.), which came from Lika county to Jaska region (Jastrebarsko, in central Croatia), where they owned together with Vernich the Turanj estate. One branch of this family moved to Slovakia (former north Hungary) (One of the descendants is also archbishop of Egger, Georgius B.-K.), where they got a gift of land of King Ivan/Joannes Zápolya, King of Hungary/John Zápolya/, before) 1552., the land estate is Fejérto in the Bihar county. In Hungary, they were named Bartakovićs von Kis-Appony. (C. AU, ADZ.)

Joannes/Ivan Bartaković von Kis-Appony the coat of arms

Ivan Bartakovic, as one of the first Bartakovićs (three brothers), moved to the Northern Hungary (today Slovakia) because the Ottoman Turks conquested Croatian counties Dalmatia and Lika. Probably with the help of the cousin Juraj Utišenić (monk Martinuzzi), the Cardinal and the Royal Governor by Croatian-Hungarian King John of Zápolya (Ivan Zapolja/Joannes Zápolya), Ivan (Joannes) Bartaković received a solid gift of land (Fejérto possession in Bihar County for the beginning). Baron Joannes (Ivan) Bartakowich von Kis-Appony, in Slovakian and Hungarian history had many famous descendants, in the church and military sphere: Bela, Josephus, Gaspar Jr., Franjo (Francius) Bartaković, etc.

The third brother, Juraj, went to central Croatia, same as Gašpar. As a faithful person and nobleman, he led the estate of the abbot and Banus Petar Keglević of Bužim in Topusko and Turopolje, and later of the the magnate Franjo Tahy in Donja Stubica in Zagorje county. He was Tahy's castellan, too. After the end of the Big Serf Rebellion of Matias Gubec (1573), he was awarded by the prize of Tahy's property in Brdovec. Later it is also mentioned the wooden court (curia) in Selnica (between Stubica and Krapina in Zagorje county), belonging to Petrus Bartakovic, apparently his descendant with whom this branch is most probably extinct. Judging by the imprint of Juraj's seal, (next regesta) he used the coat of arms of his tribe Mogorovic (three cross beams representing three rivers). His coat of arms, according to the seal, certainly looked like this:

Noblemen Nikola and Bariša/Barisha Bartaković

They are the heirs of their father's (Gašpar Bartaković) estate, as can be seen from the Royal tax lists. These were larger feudal estates in Volavja (Wolawya Superior), and the curia in Konščica and Domagovići. It was noted that their tax was drastically reduced because of the enormous destruction in the time of the Big Serf Rebelion (1573). In addition to tax lists, there are also other sources about it. In the time of the Big Serf Rebelion and the following years, great hunger and privation occurred. Because of climate disturbance there were a lot of fruitless years. Then, after 1592, Bartakovićs disappeared from the Royal tax lists. It seems that the brothers moved nine kilometers away into Žumberak's Markušići. In the Royal tax lists is to see that the previous owner in Volavja was a Vice-Banus. It is possible that their father Gašpar also had land owned by the Vice-Banus and latter the Banus famous Nikola Zrinsky (of Siget). The good reason for the relocation was, that it was the Military region (''Vojna krajina''- frontier area), so no tax was paid, but it was a duty to serve in the Army, which was carrying and some other benefits. It is symptomatic that in some of the later old church records, Bartakovićs were continuously guided into two branches, from house number 1 and house number 2 in Markušići, what induce two brothers. From these two branches, they were likely to settle through marriages into nearby places (Kostanjevac, Medven Draga, Vukšin Šipak, Karlovac, Jastrebarsko, etc.). It can be stated from the church register books that the Bartakovićs really were engaged in Croatian light cavalry (hussars), so called frontiersmen ''Uskoks'' as commanders of equestrian unity. Later, we have a colonel in Karlovac town where the Headquarters was, and some other examples.
